What is GFCI?
Ground-fault circuit interrupter, known as GFCI, is a fast-acting device or circuit breaker designed to save lives.
What is the purpose of a GFCI?
GFCI outlets are designed to shut off electric power in the event of a ground-fault in as little as 1/40 of a second.
Where are GFCI’s typically located?
GFCI’s are commonly installed where circuits may encounter water. Bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, garages and the exterior are all places to find GFCI receptacles.
What should not be plugged into GFCI receptacle?
It is best practice to avoid plugging in lights to a GFCI – you do not want to be left in the dark if a circuit trips. Also, large appliances like refrigerators, freezers, and sump pumps are some of the things recommended to not be on a GFCI. The new code will be placing these devices on GFCI protection, and the appliances will need to be made to accommodate this.
